Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often modest productions, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
