Just as bad weather hit the northwest the previous evening, City overwhelmed Manchester United away at the Etihad. It was a convincing three goal victory for their manager's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their title credentials as they consolidated their place at the top of the table.

Consecutive Losses for United

This scoreline represented back-to-back league setbacks for Skinner's side for the initial occasion since last May, placing them a significant margin off the top team with their title hopes severely dented.

The Red Devils' ability to juggle domestic and European soccer with a thin team has been a widely debated subject since they earned a place in the European competition. Looking at the calendar, it always appeared this was the week that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Regrettably for the away side, they appeared fatigued all game, the landmark win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Tactical Shifts

The United manager had attempted to freshen things up with a a few adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all added freshness, although the exclusion of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the sidelines caused surprise.

The hosts, in contrast, have no such loading concerns. Jeglertz made one change from the previous win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her first start since recovering from injury.

Commanding Opening Period

The pressure started to accumulate for Skinner and his squad from the opening minute. This was a show of the strength from Manchester City whose energetic forward line manipulated and pulled the visitors apart with a superb first half showing that saw them net a trio in under half an hour.

This left the home team firmly in control and saw the visitors disorganized. Before this match, the away side had let in just six in this league campaign but they disintegrated in the wake of City’s attacking flair.

Early Chances

The omens came soon when Vivianne Miedema used her strength to push Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot off target. Hemp was at the core of everything from the start, using the space left by Jayde Riviere down the visitors' right flank. Her deliveries were creating danger and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg scrambled off the line.

United had multiple attacks ahead, their direct style giving them alternatives in the wide areas but they could not trouble Ayaka Yamashita. City, on the other hand, dominated possession, probing their opposition and trying to lure them of their defensive shape.

Scoring Spree

They turned chances into goals with almost the first period played when Fujino won the home team a corner. A cross to the far post was nodded across goal by Shaw for Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's seventh header of the term.

They added to their advantage with an additional two goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was permitted to advance through the center from central defence, the pitch widened for the hosts. The influential Kerstin Casparij picked the ball up on the wing before delivering a precise low cross for Shaw to tap home. Shortly later, they had a third after a quick change in the ball saw Lauren Hemp allowed the opportunity to strike a shot home from distance.

After the Break

The primary substitution came from the United manager at the interval as Melvine Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was futile to alter the outcome of the match. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came nearest, hitting the upright, but the visitors were offensively poor and were unable to register a one shot on target.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have increased their lead when a delightful Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the winning team. After failing to defeat any team who finished above them in the prior term, City's side now have victories against the Gunners and United to put them in a strong situation after nine matches.
